Colored Pencils and Pen and Ink

Hi, and welcome to my blog:
I hope everyone had a wonderful summer.  I spent most of my time at our cottage, but I also spent several days on the shores of Lake Huron - and I also took a ten day trip out to the east coast with my husband, daughter and three grandchildren...we had a great time.  Needless to say, I did not spend a lot of time working on art projects.

I did manage to complete a couple Pen and Ink projects, as well as some Colored Pencil pieces.

This is a colored pencil project designed by Janelle Johnson.  It is done on 8x10 mi-teintes paper.  I love working on birds with colored pencils - there are so many colours to choose from...I find it so much fun, and a challenge, to try and make my project look just like the picture I am using.

The above projects was designed by Mary Owens and is done in pen and ink with oil rouging - it is called Do You See what I See.  The surface is a 12 inch tin plate that was sprayed with white acrylic paint, then sealed with a matte finish.  It was a fun project to complete.  Although it may look fairly simple, there are a LOT of snow drifts to rouge, and it takes some work to avoid the colors merging together.

This 'Golden Eagle' project was designed by Janelle Johnson, and is done in colored pencils on sand coloured 8x10 mi-teintes paper.  Unlike most colored pencil projects, this one did not take long to complete - it took me about 2 1/2 hours.  Note that the color of the paper is the base colour for the eagle, so when the other 'feather' colors are added, the background shows through.  Therefore, you do not have to totally cover the background - this saves lots of time.  I really enjoyed doing this piece.

October Pickins' is a Mary Owens Pen and Ink project, and I have done it on a 6x12 inch porcelain tile.  I love the colors in this piece!  I have a porcelain plate stand, and, starting every September, this project sits on the stand for the fall season.  It looks like a fairly simple piece, but there is a lot of inking, as well as lots of rouging.

In October I am scheduled to teach 'Orchard Oriole' and 'October Pickins' (both shown above) at Sisterhood Craft Supplis, 1035A Pembroke Street East, 613 629-0029.  If you are interested in either of these courses please contact Sisterhood.  Sisterhood also offers lots of other classes, including card making - their cards are amazing!  And, I also heard there is a class coming up for knitting, so if you would like to learn how to knit, this is your chance!

I am going to take a break from pen and ink and colored pencils, and work on some multi-media or abstract pieces.  There are some ideas going around in my head that I need to transfer to canvas...so, hopefully, my next post will include some new and different work.

Happy painting, and I hope you have a wonderful day!
